What are the Important Routines for Classroom Management in the Science Class?

On any given day in Science class, you know that there are important routines for classroom management.  But what are they, and how do we teach and use them when we are doing different activities?   In this series, we will go over the different parts of our Science class (beginning, middle, and end) and the important routines for classroom management each day.

In This Post

This is the first blog post of the routines for classroom management in the Science class series.  I’ll give an overview of the different routines that we need to teach and utilize during our classes.

We will talk about routines at the beginning of class, middle, and end of class.

Types of Routines for classroom management

We need to make sure we have routines set in place from the moment the kids approach and enter our classrooms to the time they leave.  Students must be taught the routines and expectations and we must be consistent with reinforcing or correcting it.  You can read more about teaching expectations in this blog post, 10 Common Classroom Procedures to Teach for a Great School Year.

List of important classroom routines.

Beginning of class routines

Before students walk into your classroom, they need to know what to do.  Some beginning of class routines to teach include how to line up in the hall before you let them in, entering the room, and getting started with any tasks.

Post a visual of what students should do when they come into class.  You could post bell work (also known as warm ups or bell ringers).  You can also post the agenda for the day and any materials they need to be prepared for class.

Middle of class routines

This is where things get different in our Science classes.  We may be taking notes, doing group work or a lab, or taking a test.  Students should know the routines for each of these different types of lessons and tasks.

The routines they should know no matter what you are teaching or they are doing include how to transition, how to move around the room, how to work and communicate with others, and what to do if they finish early.

In this Science Classroom Management Activities Ultimate Bundle, you have everything you need to teach and review procedures with your students.

End of day routine

At the end of the class period, or the day, there are a few important routines for classroom management.  Students need to know how to clean up, pack up their things, turn in assignments, complete an exit ticket, and how to leave the classroom safely.

Wrap up

We briefly went over some routines for classroom management for Science class throughout the day.  There are beginning of class routines that students must know how to do before they walk into the classroom.  There are middle of class routines that students should be doing no matter what we are teaching.  And, end of the day routines that are important, even though class is almost over.

Your turn! What routines would you like to improve or add to your classroom? Reply and let me know.
